βοΈ Judging Format
Judging Information
Judging for the STAR Warriors ADC Pro event will be conducted through a combination of team interviews and Engineering Notebook review. Our goal is to provide a fair, consistent, and student-centered judging experience that gives teams an opportunity to showcase their work, decision-making, teamwork, and accomplishments.
Engineering Notebooks
Teams wishing to participate in judging should bring their Engineering Notebook to the event for on-site review.
Notebooks may be provided in either of the following formats:
A paper copy of the team's notebook
A laptop, tablet, or other device containing the notebook saved locally as a PDF
If using a digital notebook, please download the PDF to the device before arriving. Teams should not rely on internet or cloud access to make their notebook available to judges.
The notebook or device should remain available for judging as needed during the event.
Team Interviews
Team interviews will be conducted on a walk-up basis, allowing teams to select a time that works best with their competition schedule. There are no assigned interview times.
Teams attending the optional Thursday session may complete their judging interview Thursday evening. We encourage teams to take advantage of this opportunity when possible, as completing the interview early allows students to focus on competition activities Friday.
Walk-up interviews will continue throughout the competition on Friday. Teams should visit the judging area when they have sufficient time between competition activities.
Teams may also designate specific student team members to complete the interview while other team members are participating in competition activities.
Students should be prepared to discuss topics such as:
Their design and development process
Programming and autonomous development
Flight testing and refinement
Strategy and decision-making
Team organization and responsibilities
Problems encountered and how they were solved
Lessons learned throughout the season
A Note About Our Judges
Our judges are volunteers who generously donate their time to support students and make these events possible. Some judges may have extensive experience in aviation, engineering, robotics, or drones, while others may have limited technical experience.
When speaking with judges, teams should focus on explaining their process and reasoning, rather than relying heavily on specialized terminology or highly technical details. Explain what you did, why you made particular decisions, what worked, what did not work, and what your team learned along the way.
Please treat all judges with patience, courtesy, and respect and help make the interview an informative and enjoyable conversation.
Judging Decisions
Judging decisions will be based on the applicable ADC Pro judging criteria, notebook review, team interviews, and other permitted observations.
To protect the integrity of the judging process, judges and event staff will not discuss individual evaluations, notebook assessments, rankings, or award deliberations during or after the event.
We encourage teams to view judging as an opportunity to tell the story of their season and showcase not only what they accomplished, but how they got there.
