General information

Thank you so much for considering and registering for the CHENEY CARDINAL CLASH VIII. We are proud to be hosting our 8th Middle School Robotics Tournament. Anticipate another quality event from us! We will see you and your team(s) on Saturday, January 30th, 2027.  This event will be a MIDDLE SCHOOL ONLY event and is open to all registered Kansas teams. This event will be held in the Middle School gym, but drop off your teams that morning on the west side of the complex at the entrance to the high school and follow the signs to the gym. This event will have six qualification rounds per team. There will be an on-site concession stand for lunch. Please note our concession stand is an all-cash concession stand - we cannot accept Venmo or debit cards. We are planning on having plaques for awards and medals for the Tournament Champions and the Excellence award winners.  An ADA entrance is accessible at the doors on the NE corner of the middle school gym. 

Competition Preparation:

This event is sure to be a fast-paced and exciting event. All teams should come prepared for competition. Here are a few steps that every team should take to ensure that they are prepared...

1. Review the rules and run through the inspection checklist before the competition.

2. Check the official RECF Pinnacle Game Manual for rule updates and changes.

3. Pack for the event the day before the day of departure. Remember: Goggles/Safety glasses, spare parts and tools, batteries and chargers, power strip, extension cord, laptop computer, engineering notebook (if you have one, helpful for Judges, Innovate, Design, and Excellence Awards), banners/decorations for your team pit, giveaways if you want. Be certain you've reviewed the Qualifying Criteria for consideration for the Excellence Award.

4. Safety comes first. Tools brought with you should not pose a safety risk with sparks, etc.

5. Understand how the game will be played.

6. Be certain you have the latest updates for all your equipment.

7. Participation and consent form - a completed form for all participants must be turned in to participate. These should be completed online and uploaded to the RECF website when possible and will be there all season long; contact me via email if you need help doing this. If that capability does not exist, you will need to turn in a paper copy for each tournament.

8:00 AM Doors open for Team Check-in and inspections begin. Engineering notebooks will be collected at the Inspection  table when you arrive.  

9:00 AM Drivers meeting

9:30 AM Qualification rounds begin and Solo course opens. (Each Team will be allowed up to 3 Solo runs of each.) There will be a general announcement of when the Judges will begin visiting with teams. We will have tables set up at the end of the gym for teams to visit with Judges when their schedule allows. Don't wait too late please, because Judging decisions on awards must be made soon after the conclusion of the qualification rounds. 

12:15 - 1:00 PM Lunch Break (can change depending upon how event is proceeding)

1:00 PM Qualification rounds continue

1:30 PM (approximately)Solo course closes at the end of the qualification rounds

2:30 PM Alliance selection

2:45 PM Elimination rounds begin.

3:45 PM Event Concludes and Awards Ceremony begins.

4:00 PM Conclusion of Event, but hopefully earlier than this.

Judging format

This event will have All In-Person Judging  - The Team Interviews and Engineering Notebooks will be judged in-person the day of the event beginning at 8:30 AM. Teams should bring a physical copy of their notebook for submission to the judges.  Judges will not review digital notebook submissions. Please print any digital engineering notebooks in advance and bring them with you the day of the event. We will have tables set up at the end of the gym for teams to visit with Judges. Teams should facilitate their interview by taking their robots and going to a judges table when they have a chance. Don't wait too late please, because Judging decisions on awards must be made soon after the conclusion of the qualification rounds. Teams must submit a copy of the Innovate Form inside the front cover of their engineering notebook in order to be considered for the Innovate Award. We will have copies of this form available the day of the event on the inspection table or bring yours already filled out in your notebook.

Travel information

From US-400 east of Cheney take the Cheney exit at 383rd St. Go south past golf course and continue south past the middle school and turn west on 6th street. Go 1 block west until Marshall St. Go north and pull into the unloading area by the Cheney High School entrance. Proceed through the high school lunchroom/commons to the middle school gym.

From MacArthur Rd (W 39th St South) turn north onto main street and follow this until 6th street. Turn west on 6th street. Go 1 block west until Marshall St. Go north and pull into the unloading area by the Cheney High School entrance. Proceed through the high school lunchroom/commons to the middle school gym.

There is ample room in the high school parking for automobiles as well as school buses and vans.

Emergency information

If weather appears to be threatening, a decision will made in consultation with the athletic director/principal the day before the meet whether or not to cancel the meet. We may or may not reschedule depending upon the availability of weekends coming up. 

An on-site AED is located in the commons area which is the same general area as the concession stand and restrooms. 

For a medical emergency we would always call 911 first. We do have a local volunteer fire station service that would respond before an ambulance would.   

Refund policy

Refunds and Payment ... The registration deadline is January 20th, with payment expected by January 23rd. 

  • Teams are welcome to pay in person at the event by  check. Please contact the event partner (Jim Gillett) before the payment deadline (January 23rd, 2027) to confirm this method of payment. You may also pay through RECF.
  • Any checks should be made out to "Cheney High School Robotics" as the high school activities fund is what we use to track finances and please write "Cardinal Clash Jan '27" in the Memo line to help our Secretaries.
  • If a Coach/Mentor completes registration for the event then chooses to withdraw or not attend: No refund will be issued
  • For teams that have registered and paid but do not show up the day of the event: the team registration fee will be nonrefundable.


Cancellation: ...If the Event Partner has to cancel the event without rescheduling, you will be issued a refund minus the $5 RECF accounting fee.
